Let's Talk Tariffs - Is Your Team Ready?

Tariffs are making headlines again, and with them come waves of uncertainty—especially for sales teams caught in the middle of pricing pressures, supply chain questions, and customer concerns.

While the specifics of tariff policies may shift quickly, the need for strong sales leadership remains steady. How your team navigates these conversations now can either build long-term trust or erode customer confidence. Here are four guiding principles to keep your team on the right track:

1. Don’t Wait. Be Proactive.

Your customers are reading the same headlines you are. Don’t let them be the ones to bring it up first. Instead, equip your salespeople with a plan:

  • Identify key accounts that could be impacted.
  • Set a timeline for outreach.
  • Have meaningful conversations—not just check-ins—about what tariff changes mean for both sides of the partnership.

Being upfront shows leadership, not weakness. It signals to your customers that you’re managing the issue rather than reacting to it.

2. Collaborate on Impact and Strategy

Tariffs don’t just affect your bottom line—they affect your customers’ too. Invite them into the conversation.

  • Are you absorbing some of the costs or passing them along?
  • Will pricing adjust if tariffs are lifted?
  • Are you exploring sourcing changes to mitigate the impact?

Co-developing a strategy puts you and your customer on the same side of the table, solving the problem together.

3. Quote with Uncertainty in Mind

If your team is pricing new projects, build in flexibility:

  • Base pricing on current inventory, where costs are known.
  • Set shorter expiration dates on quotes—think 10 days, not 30.
  • Include clear language about potential price adjustments tied to tariff changes.

This approach doesn’t just protect your margin—it creates urgency and sets clear expectations.

4. Leverage Competitive Advantage When You Have It

If your supply chain is U.S.-based and largely unaffected by tariffs, now is the time to highlight it.

  • Emphasize supply chain stability.
  • Use that reliability as a differentiator in new business pitches.
  • Position your team as a low-risk, high-confidence partner in a volatile market.

Sales teams don’t need to have all the answers. But they do need a clear, confident approach.

If your team needs help crafting your messaging, updating quote language, or preparing your salespeople for these critical conversations, we’re here to help. Let’s talk.
